Welcome to my online course orientation. The purpose of a course orientation is to make sure that students have the skills and knowledge necessary to be successful when taking an online class.

With that goal in mind, you will be required to review several items and complete some tasks after which you need to let me know that you understand the material and are confident that you will be able to access the course materials. The eLearning (Desire2Learn) course site will be made available on October16, 2014 for 2nd 8 week classes.



HOW TO BEGIN:

Students visiting this site are either ENROLLED STUDENTS (students who have added the class and whose name appears on my roster), WAIT LIST STUDENTS (students who have placed their name on the class wait list), or OTHER STUDENTS (students who have not placed their name on the class wait list). Please follow the instructions for your group below.


ENROLLED STUDENTS:
To remain in my online class, please send me an email before 5:00 p.m. October 21, 2014.
Include the following:
Subject line: course code plus the words "Enrolled Student" e.g. CISA 305 Enrolled Student or CISA 306 Enrolled Student
Message body:
1. Your full name and student ID#.
2. I am still interested in taking the class.
3. I have reviewed and understand the orientation material.
4. My Technical and Student Skill Quiz scores are {please insert your two scores here}. Please DO NOT attach copies of your quizzes. (See instructions below)
5. I have included/attached the required information for the course prerequisite (CISA 305 & CISA 306 both have prerequisites). (See instructions below)
6. I understand the final exam will be given on {please insert the date and time of the final exam here} and I will adjust my school/work/life schedule in order to attend.

IMPORTANT: As an enrolled student, if you do not contact me by 5:00 p.m. October 21, 2014, I will give your seat to a student wishing to add the class.

Please be patient as I need to wait until after 5:00 p.m. October 21, 2014, to see how many open seats I have.  Once you receive the permission number, you must use the number for yourself and enroll IMMEDIATELY.  You cannot be added to our eLearning (Desire2Learn) course until you have officially registered for the class. Permission numbers will be given in wait list order for those who contact me as described.

If the wait list is full (20 student maximum) you do not have a very good chance of being added to the class.

HOW TO BE SUCCESSFUL:

Below you will find several items that you should become familiar with prior to beginning our online class. Please review the material and complete all tasks.

How to log on to the CRC Computer Lab network:

  • You will be using the CRC network computers during the final exam
  • Username: w followed by your 7-digit student ID#.
  • Password: use your Los Rios unified password (the same one as eServices and Los Rios Gmail)

    Go to the Cosumnes River College Web site:

  • Click Log in to Desire2Learn

    Log on to eLearning (Desire2Learn):

  • URL: http://d2l.losrios.edu
  • Username: w followed by 7-digit student ID#
  • Password: use your Los Rios unified password (the same one as eServices and Los Rios Gmail)
  • Click on your class:

    Your E-mail address in Desire2Learn:

  • Your Los Rios Gmail address is the default email address for Desire2Learn and this cannot be changed.
  • If you want your messages forwarded to another email account, go to https://apps.losrios.edu to update the options.

    Prerequisites:

    CISA 305 Students:
  • All CISA 305 students must attach a copy of their transcript (unofficial is acceptable--copy and paste from eServices) highlighting BUSTEC 302 (BUS 41) or take an online keyboarding test to verify their keyboarding speed at 25 wam.
  • The keyboarding test is located at: www.typingtest.com
  • Choose 3 min. for Test Duration, Choose any Test Text, Click Start Test.
  • Upon completion of the test, press the Alt key + the Print Screen (PrtScn) key on your keyboard to capture the information on the screen, and then paste it into a blank Word document. Open Microsoft Word and click paste to place your test results in a Word document. Save this document as "Typing Test" and attach it to your orientation email.
  • You must have 3 or fewer errors.
  • Your "TYPING SPEED" must be 25 words/minute or faster.
  • Your test length must be 3 minutes.

    IMPORTANT: You may be dropped from the class if I do not receive the prerequisite verification by 5:00 p.m. Friday of week 1.

    CISA 306 Students:
  • All CISA 306 students must attach a copy of their transcript (unofficial is acceptable--copy and paste from eServices) highlighting CISA 305 (CIS 11A). If you are currently taking one of my CISA 305 classes, you do not need to send your transcript--I will know if you are passing the class.

    IMPORTANT: You may be dropped from the class if I do not receive the prerequisite verification by 5:00 p.m. Friday of week 1.

    Credit by Examination:

  • Do you think you already know the material to be covered in this course?
  • If you have completed 12 units at CRC and have a GPA of 3.0, you may be able to take a “Credit by Examination” test and receive credit for the course.
  • “Credit by Examination” forms are available in the Business & Family Science area office located in SOC 158.



    HOW TO CONTINUE:

    Log on to eLearning (Desire2Learn) and begin your class. Desire2Learn is the online course management system that we will be using for my courses. To begin read the News announcements. That is where you will find out where information, such as our syllabus, is located.
