Pt. Reyes Field Trip Directions

Meet by the flagpole of the Bear Valley Visitor's Center of Pt. Reyes National Seashore at 10 a.m. on Sunday, October 20, 2019.  The trip from downtown Sacramento to Pt. Reyes can take two hours under ideal traffic conditions.  Give yourself plenty of time.  The field trip will end at about 5 p.m. on the Tiburon Peninsula.  You will be asked to complete a waiver form in advance of arriving at Pt. Reyes.

Physical requirements:  Three of the four stops involve no more than moderate walking on a mostly level surface – paved path, dirt path – for no more than a mile at a time.  The last stop involves a little more strenuous hike up hill for about 2/3 of a mile.  If one has health issues that could be compromised by this activity, please consider.

Where we'll go:
Earthquake trail
Kehoe Beach
Pillow basalt outcrop near Nicasio Reservoir
Marin County. Open Space Area on Tiburon Peninsula -- view of the north bay

rain jacket/umbrella if it's raining
long pants
comfortable walking shoes
water bottle
sack lunch
protective sungear (hat with brim, sunglasses, sunblock, etc.)
notebook
camera optional

Here are the directions:
Take Interstate 80 toward San Francisco.
In Vallejo, take the highway 37 exit and take highway 37 toward Novato.  In Vallejo, highway 37 may also be called Marine World Parkway.
Highway 37 goes around the north end of the San Francisco Bay.
In Novato, take highway 37 across the highway 101 overpass into Novato.  On the west side of highway 101, the road becomes S. Novato Blvd.   Be very careful, here, because this is probably where mistakes are most likely to occur.  If you end up getting back on highway 101,  then you have taken a wrong turn.  You only need to cross over highway 101.
Take S. Novato Blvd through Novato until it runs into Pt. Reyes-Petaluma Rd., about 6-8 miles outside of Novato.
Turn left on Pt. Reyes-Petaluma Rd.
About 3 miles after the turn, turn right to cross the old bridge (you will still be on Pt. Reyes-Petaluma Rd.)
Continue for another 3 miles until you reach Highway 1.
Turn left (south) onto Highway 1, and go through the town, Pt. Reyes Station.
About 2 miles outside of Pt. Reyes Station, you will begin to see signs for the Pt. Reyes Visitor's Center.  Look very carefully here.   You'll be going south.
Prepare to turn right on Bear Valley Rd. (to the west) when you see the sign on the right.  (It can sneak up on you)
Continue to the visitor's center.  You will see a red barn on the left.
Park in the visitor's parking lot -- watch for foot traffic
See you all by the flagpole. (there is a bathroom available at the visitor’s center)
