Geology 311 -- Historical Geology Lab -- Summer 2015

Course description: Laboratory studies will accompany and complement GEOL 310, Historical Geology. Use of sedimentary rocks, fossils, geologic maps, and cross sections will aid in interpreting ancient environments, tectonic settings, and geologic history. Other concepts addressed include age relations and correlation of rock and time units, and introduction to fossil identification and biostratigraphy. At least one field trip or an appropriate alternative activity will be required as an introduction to sedimentary environments and field methods in geology.
(Together with Geology 310, CAN GEOL 4)
Student Learning Outcomes: #1: Evaluate temporal rates and spatial scales of geologic processes in Earth history.
#2: Evaluate sedimentary environments through geologic time.
#3: Incorporate fossil evidence to decipher geologic history.
#4: Assess information from geologic maps.
#5: Apply plate tectonic theory to formulate past, present, and future changes on Earth.
Class time: Monday-Thursday, 10:45-12:10 PM. The last day of regular class is Wednesday, July 29.

The  final is scheduled for Thursday, July 30 from 10:45-12:10 PM.

Class room: Cosumnes River College, SCI-109
Instructor: Hiram Jackson
tel: (916) 691-7605
e-mail: jacksoh@crc.losrios.edu
Teaching style: ~30 minute interactive lecture to introduce each lab activity.  The rest of the time will be spent doing the lab activity.
Units: This course is worth one units of physical science  lab credit.  If you need physical science lecture credit, you should consider signing up for Geology 310 -- Historical Geology Lecture.
Pre-/Co-requisite: Geology 310, Physical Geology Lecture, is a required prerequisite or co-requisite.  The ideal arrangement is to take Geology 311 in the same semester with Geology 310.
Office hours: Monday-Thursday, 12:30-1:30 p.m.

or by appointment, room SCI-111
Please see my class schedule for more information.
Textbook: Historical Geology: Interpretations and Applications, Jon Poort & Roseann Carlson, 6th edition.  The lab book is available in the bookstore for $110 new, $83 used.
Exams: There will be a 2 quizzes, and a final on July 30.
Makeup policy: You have one week to make up any lab missed. Makeups must be turned in at the beginning of lab on the following week. If any more time is required, please contact me immediately. If you cannot attend a lab test, you must contact me prior to noon on the day that the test is given to be eligible for a makeup. Makeup tests must be taken within a week.
Attendance policy: If student misses turning in three or more lab assignments, I reserve the right to drop the student from the class.  With excessive absences you risk not being able to finish lab assignments, not being able to take lab tests, or being dropped from the class roster. If you must be absent, please leave a message indicating what the nature of your absence is, and what arrangements you can make to make up the necessary work.
Grading: Labs: 50%
Quizzes: 25
Final: 25%

Grades will be calculated on the following scale:

90-100% A, 80-89% B, 70-79% C, 60-69% D, <60  oops!
Updated grades will be available on the D2L gradebook.
Note: Students with special needs should contact me as soon as possible outside of class.
Field trip: There is no formal or required field trip for this class, however I propose leading a voluntary field trips on a weekend in mid-July.  Attending any approved CRC geoscience field trip will drop your lowest lab grade.
